Residency Special Features:
The St. Claire Regional Medical Center Department of Pharmacy has over 20 years of experience in developing competent pharmacists in a community hospital environment. The resident is trained in a variety of core rotational and longitudinal learning experiences including internal medicine, surgery, critical care, geriatrics, drug information, informatics, pharmacy practice management, quality improvement, policy development, medication safety and leadership development. Electives include infectious disease, behavioral health, pain management and oncology with the flexibility to create additional rotations. The resident is required to present a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and to develop and present a residency project at a regional Residency Conference. During the year the resident will build skills in pharmacokinetic dosing, optimizing patient drug regimens, pain management, systemic anticoagulation dosing, nutrition support and management of other therapies. Other activities include integral roles in drug policy development, formulary management, medication usage evaluation, committee memberships, precepting pharmacy students and collaborating with other healthcare professionals.

St. Claire Regional Medical Center is a regional referral center and the largest rural hospital in northeastern Kentucky. The medical staff is comprised of more than 100 physicians representing 31 medical and surgical specialties serving a population of over 160,000. In addition to inpatient services on the main campus, operations consist of a surgical specialty clinic, 5 comprehensive family medicine clinics, and home health services covering an 11 county service area. The medical center is an established training site for various medical residency programs and healthcare disciplines. St. Claire also serves as an experiential training site for PharmD candidates from several schools of pharmacy. At St. Claire, pharmacists function as integral members of the healthcare team, and provide a wide array of services to a variety of patients. They take personal interest in the training of the residents in order to develop confident leaders for the future.
