Special Program Features:
The Pharmacy Technician Program is a one-year certificate program emphasizing hospital, community, and home infusion/nursing home practice. Financial aid and information for job placement is available. The didactic portion of the program includes an introduction to pharmacy, pharmacology, calculations, busines language skills, medical terminology, and law and ethics. Issues in pharmacy are covered with role play to emphasize communication, teamwork, and cnflict management. The comprehensive training program has laboratory course instruction which emphasizes hands-on skill development including unit dose cart fill, aseptic I.V. preparation, inventory packaging, compounding, and outpatient prescriptions. Computerized order entry and applications are performed in a state-of-the-art computer lab. In addition, the coursework prepares the individual for the national certification exam. Focus on Women Aid, and childcare are available for qualified students.
Acceptance Requirements:
Admission criteria required. High school graduate--GPA 2.25 + or GED equivalency. Acceptable math, reading and typing placement tests. An interview with the clinical coordinator of the program is required.
General Location Training Sites:
Centrally located in southeast Michigan, which includes Dearborn, Detroit, and Wayne County.
Special Requirements:
Daytime/afternoon rotations. A completed health appraisal form noting a recent physical exam and current immunizations including Rubella titer, negative TB skin test, and Hepatitis B vaccine or signed waiver. Proof of medical insurance.
Academic Degree:
1 year certificate/Associate Degree option.
Additional Requirements:
Students have the option of completing a One-Plus-One Option in Business or Management to receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree. In addition, the Pre-Pharmacy Academic Transfer Degree is a two-year program available for students to complete an Associates Degree in Science to transfer to a four-year university to earn a Pharm D. (pharmacist)
