Residency Special Features:   

The Pharmacy Residency Program Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System is a collaborative program between the School of Pharmacy University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and the VA Caribbean Healthcare System. The program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. It complies with the ASHP-PGY1 standards and emphasizes the following competency areas: patient care, advancing practice and improving patient care, leadership and management, and teaching, education and dissemination of knowledge. Residents participate in acute and ambulatory patient care experiences including internal medicine, intensive care unit, oncology, anticoagulation management program, home-based primary care, pain and palliative care, extended-care unit services, and patient-aligned care teams (PACT). Also, in practice management extended rotation, investigational drug service, in a teaching rotation at the School of Pharmacy UPR, and in precepting students in their introductory and advanced practicums. An academic certificate program with the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy is offered to interested residents in the Teaching and Learning Curriculum as a parallel optional opportunity.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   

Participation in the NMS Resident Matching Program and PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service). Pharm.D. degree required, U. S. citizenship, college transcript, Curriculum Vitae, three letters of recommendation, licensure eligibility or licensure to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia, essay expressing interest and reason for pursuing a residency, fully bilingual (Spanish and English).

The San Juan VA Caribbean Healthcare System is the most comprehensive hospital in Puerto Rico in terms of services rendered. Services offered include surgery, medicine, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, rehabilitation of the blind, nursing home, and the home care programs. It also offers extensive ambulatory care services with emphasis on interdisciplinary PACT. The main hospital is located in the San Juan metro area where a summer time is enjoyed throughout the year.
