Residency Special Features:   

Designed to develop your critical thinking and communication skills to prepare confident members of the patient care team, this residency focuses on medication therapy management with an emphasis on ambulatory care. Preceptors providing direct patient care management have a scope of practice with prescribing privileges and are credentialed to provide disease state and medication management for patients in their own clinics. The pharmacist-run clinics include primary care (management of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking cessation), infectious disease, anti-coagulation and psychiatry. Core rotations include: ambulatory care, anticoagulation, acute care, psychiatry, pharmacy administration and pharmacy practice. Electives include core rotation extension, ambulatory care infectious diseases, extended care/geriatrics, home based primary care/spinal cord injury, pharmacy informatics, rural health/home based primary care and a flexible individualized rotation. A teaching certificate is available through Rutgers University.

An integrated system with two main campuses and ten outpatient clinics, we serve more than 56,000 Veterans with 630,000 outpatient visits and 5,200 inpatient admissions per year. Patient care is fully automated with a state of the art electronic medical record system. We offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services - tertiary care medical center with acute care inpatient services (medical, surgical, psychiatric, and spinal cord injury), primary and specialty care outpatient clinics, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment, extended psychiatric care, methadone maintenance treatment program, hemodialysis services, and a long term care community living center (nursing home). We are affiliated with three Schools of Pharmacy – Rutgers, Fairleigh Dickinson and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy – and two Schools of Medicine– Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
