The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System has been providing care since 1933. The health care complex sits in a "paradise like semi-tropical setting" on the edge of Boca Ciega Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Overall, more than 3,000 veterans per day receive health care services at Bay Pines, the Fort Myers Outpatient clinic, and our associated community based outpatient clinics. Bay Pines VAHCS provides comprehensive medical care including acute medical, surgical, and psychiatric care as well as extended medical and psychiatric care, rehabilitative inpatient care, and outpatient care. In addition, Bay Pines VAHCS supervises a community nursing home care program that is one of the largest in the VA system. The facility also operates seven community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC) and a state nursing home. Bay Pines offers medical residency training in all major medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Associated Health Training is offered in nursing, psychology, audiology, dental, dietetics, and pharmacy. Training is also provided to over 700 medical students, nursing, and associated health trainees annually. In 2007, Bay Pines VA Healthcare System received full accreditation from the Joint Commission in our hospital, long term care, home care, and mental health programs. Bay Pines VAHCS also received a Level 2 accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers; we are the first VA site in our region to receive level 2 accreditation. Bay Pines VAHCS also is the first VA site in the state of Florida to receive stroke certification.
