Residency Special Features:   In the beginning of the residency, the resident completes orientation for order entry/pharmacy operations, pharmacokinetics, and outpatient anticoagulation (AC): AC clinic and ortho/cardiac AC service. Core rotations then include internal medicine 1 and 2, critical care, hospitalist rounds, cardiology/congestive heart failure, antimicrobial stewardship, and pharmacy administration and practice management. Elective rotations include palliative care, geriatrics/rehabilitation, pharmacy informatics, medication safety, emergency department, cardiac surgery: cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) and step down (CVSD) multidisciplinary rounds, additional experience in any of the core rotations, and/or an off-site rotation subject to availability (Maximum of 1 off-site elective rotation/resident).

In addition to these block, 4-week rotations, the resident also gains experience with longitudinal rotations including order entry/kinetics (staffing coverage), leadership, drug utilization/research, and education/teaching for 10 months. Additional longitudinal experiences include outpatient AC: AC clinic rotating with ortho/cardiac AC service for 6 months, longitudinal AC patient case assignment for 10 months, PATCH program for transitions in care for 3 months, and an elective longitudinal: geriatrics clinic or infectious disease clinic for 3 months.

Staffing requirements include one 4-hr weeknight staffing shift per week and participation in order entry and kinetics for an 8-hour shift on Saturday and Sunday of every third weekend.

Teaching opportunities include educating patients, precepting pharmacy students in the clinical track program at University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, topic discussions, journal club sessions, house staff noon conferences, and pharmacy staff development. Off-site opportunities include teaching at the School of Pharmacy and participation in pharmacotherapy rounds with local residents.Resident projects will include a drug utilization evaluation, longitudinal research project, pharmacotherapy rounds, drug monograph/class review, treatment guideline development, and formulary standardization project in addition to assigned leadership for a pharmacy committee, presentation at Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, weekly pharmacy department updates, and participation in the monthly pharmacy newsletter.
