Residency Special Features:   The PGY2 critical care pharmacy residency at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center consists of 12 months of critical care training and experience. The goals, objectives and evaluation procedures are established to be consistent with the PGY2 ASHP Standards with ASHP Goals and Objectives focused in Critical Care. The program allows sufficient flexibility to adapt to the needs and interests of the individual resident, while providing a foundation to develop professional critical care practice skills.
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available the PGY2 critical care resident will rotate in the following critical care specialties: medicine, surgery/trauma, neuro critical care, coronary care, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatrics and emergency medicine. The resident will also participate in medical/trauma codes, a critical care focused research project and critical care committees.
