Residency Special Features:   *NMS Code 150313 - traditional PGY1 residency. NMS Code 150325 - PGY1 with advanced ambulatory experiences. Eight residency positions are available for 2018-2019,with two positions designated for residents interested in acquiring advanced ambulatory practice skills. This comprehensive program is designed to provide training experiences in the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in an integrated health system. PGY1 residents acquire substantial knowledge required for skillful problem solving, and strengthen their professional values and attitudes, while developing competence to provide pharmaceutical care in multiple patient care environments. Residents are provided direct patient care opportunities in resolving drug-related problems while completing required training in internal and ambulatory medicine, infectious disease, nephrology, cardiology, critical care, and research.Both training tracks include opportunities to select up to three electives (i.e., HIV clinic, trauma service, stroke team, nutrition, behavioral health, ambulatory care oncology, accountable care organization, neonatology, or pediatrics). Residents in the advanced ambulatoryexperience will select electives in the ambulatory services division of the health system. Direct patient care in family medicine, and ambulatory cardiology is offered, providing services such as smoking cessation counseling and managing chronic diseases such as CHF, diabetes, HIV, thromboembolic and lipid disorders. Each resident completes a research project to improve pharmaceutical care and participates in medication-use/safety processes, formulary management, community outreach programs, and multidisciplinary committees. Additionally, all residents provide ACPE -accredited CE programs to pharmacy providers and team-teach a therapeutics course for the Nurse Practitioner Program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Precepting experience is developed while co-precepting students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Campbell University.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   Pharm.D., with an acceptable academic record and high degree of professional motivation. Projects for the coming year include optimizing pharmacists' documentation in the electronic medical record, increasing patient medication education, developing a comprehensive systemwide specialty pharmacy service, optimizing inventory management through our automated carousels and cartless dispensing model, adding barcode technology to the sterile products preparation area, integrating pharmacists into systemwide Lean teams to reduce waste and improve patient experiences, and planning for moving women's and neonatal services to the Moses Cone Hospital campus. Cone Health pharmacy offers PGY2 residency training in cardiology, infectious diseases, neonatology, oncology, and ambulatory care, and a PGY1/PGY2/MS health-system pharmacy administration program that is affiliated with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
