Residency Special Features:   Residents completing this residency will be competent and confident in the management of medication therapy for a variety of disease states in an acute care setting. These pharmacists will be proficient in drug information, communication, time management, and in education of other health care professionals, and patients. Rotations seek to build on individual interests. An optional Teaching Certificate is offered through Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn College of Pharmacy. Required rotations include: orientation, internal medicine (IM) with a focus on cardiology, internal medicine with a focus on nephrology, critical care, infectious disease, drug information, pharmacy management & informatics, oncology. Residents will select a primary elective to ensure adequate patient care experience. Primary electives include internal medicine with a focus on surgery, emergency medicine, critical care II, or a second month in one of the IM rotations. Residents will select two other elective rotations which include: women’s health and pediatrics, palliative care, pharmacy informatics II, medication safety, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacy management II, precepting (this rotation is required for any residents choosing to participate in the Shenandoah University Teaching Certificate Program), oncology II, or any of the primary electives. Longitudinal Experiences occur throughout the residency year and include Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, distributive services (staffing), presentations (journal clubs, case presentations, TechTalks, and a CE-approved education program). Residents will staff approximately 36 hours per month (every other weekend July – September, then every third weekend, plus 40 additional weekend hours throughout the year). Residents will also complete a research project designed to achieve a specific research objective and prepare a manuscript suitable for publication. Residents complete a medication use evaluation to develop an understanding of the medication use process. Residents will complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) curriculum and will participate in our clinical pharmacy on-call service. Call consists of responding to codes while present in the hospital and being the clinical pharmacy resource for drug information questions.
