Residency Special Features:   This PGY1 residency program is designed to develop competent pharmacists, professionally equipped to serve as clinical pharmacy specialists in a variety of practice settings. Residents will provide care to veterans in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Outpatient experiences include involvement in patient aligned care teams (PACT), Home Based Primary Care (HBPC), psychiatry clinic, outpatient oncology and anticoagulation clinic. Resident Inpatient activities include rounding with physicians and participating in interdisciplinary team meetings on the acute care, intensive care, psychiatric care and long term care units. Management and leadership training is received throughout the residency in the form of longitudinal responsibilities, as well as, participation in a variety of committees such as PT&N. The Martinsburg VAMC is directly affiliated with Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. Activities with the School of Pharmacy include Journal Club, Residency Forum and the option to participate in a Teaching Certificate Program.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, a graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy, and hold an active pharmacy license or be eligible for licensure in any U.S. state or territory. A letter of interest, Curriculum Vitae (or resume), transcript, and three references are required for application.

Site Special Features:   The Martinsburg VA Medical Center is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving 35,598 Veterans across the four states of West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. The Martinsburg VA Medical Center also operates seven (7) Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in the tri-state panhandle area. Services offered include primary care, specialty care, long-term care, addiction treatment, rehabilitation, and mental health.
Pharmacy Service provides a broad range of services to the medical staff and Veterans of VAMC Martinsburg to include medication/supply distribution, procurement, clinical pharmacy medication therapy management, drug information, medication reconciliation, and other consultative services. Distribution services include scheduled and as-needed medications to inpatient and outpatient, long-term care, and other areas. Clinical Pharmacy Specialties include mid-level direct patient care in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, anticoagulation, mental health, intensive care, hepatitis C, oncology and antimicrobial stewardship. Pharmacy Service specialty clinics provides care utilizing face-to-face clinics, telephone clinics, and secure messaging. Staff and specialty pharmacists are active in patient education classes, individual patient counseling, shared medical appointments, and travelling Vet programs. Pharmacy staff regularly participates in quality management, compliance, and process improvement activities.
