Residency Special Features:   Core learning experiences include internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, hematology/oncology, pediatrics, and informatics. Longitudinal learning experiences include ambulatory care, managed care, teaching, and pharmacy practice. These experiences are designed to produce a well-rounded practitioner. Routine experiences in infectious disease and antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacokinectics, anticoagulation, and pharmacy practice administration allow for continuous building of clinical experience. A strong emphasis is placed on expanding the resident's teaching aptitude through learning to precept student phamacists and providing instruction on many levels for varied audiences. Teaching skill development is supported by the opportunity to complete a teaching certificate through the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.

The Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center is a 358-bed, acute-care hospital with an adjacent psychiatric hospital, the ARH Psychiatric Center, which is the designated State acute mental health facility for a 21-county region in Eastern Kentucky. Hazard ARH also features an Accredited Chest Pain Center; Level II Nursery, Accredited Cancer Center, Accredited Breast Center, and is proud to be the first Eastern Kentucky hospital to join the UK Stroke Affiliate Network. The hospital is affiliated with several colleges of pharmacy, including the University of Kentucky, Sullivan University, and Appalachian College of Pharmacy. The pharmacy department is involved with multiple investigational drug trials. The ARH system was selected as the 2010 Outstanding Rural Health Organization in the nation by the National Rural Health Association.
