Residency Special Features:   

This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to allow pharmacists to develop strong foundational pharmacotherapy, operational, and practice management skills enabling them to progress towards personal goals. PGY1 residents will refine these skills via a well-established integrated clinical practice model. Required rotations and experiences include: internal medicine, critical care medicine/critical care trauma, family medicine, ambulatory care, practice management, hospital pharmacy practice including cardiac arrest response, drug information/drug policy, and the completion of a research project. Electives include: infectious disease, emergency medicine, transitional care, oncology, nephrology, cardiology, transplant, neurology/neurocritical care, women's and infant's medicine, night-shift medicine, pharmacy informatics, and completion of mentoring and teaching and learning programs.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   

Eligibility for Tennessee licensure as a registered pharmacist, college transcripts, letter of intent, curriculum vitae, 3 completed reference writer forms via PhORCAS, PharmD degree from United States accredited college of pharmacy, and United States citizenship or permanent residency. All application materials will be accepted through PhORCAS.

Site Special Features:   

The hospital is a 600-bed, tertiary care facility that serves the entire East Tennessee region, providing all general and specialty (including Level III Neonatal ICU) clinical services, and a Level I Trauma Center designation supported by an aeromedical helicopter program. The hospital utilizes an electronic Medication Administration Record and Bar-Coded Medication Administration along with Computerized Prescriber Order Entry and Documentation. The pharmacy staff at UTMC provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including operating a surgery satellite, oncology satellite, retail pharmacy, twelve integrated clinical teams, and specialized services in 18 clinical areas. The department also has a full-time medication safety office and supports a growing clinical trials operation. The campus includes a graduate school of medicine as well as a college of pharmacy, allowing for additional teaching and learning opportunities.
