The PGY-1 residency program at BMH-M (TN) provides an opportunity to accelerate the professional growth of a pharmacist beyond entry-level competence in clinical inpatient pharmacy practice. Major components of this residency include: direct patient care, hospital committee involvement, teaching & precepting, completion of a research project, & staffing. The 12-month program is composed of 8 learning experiences. Internal medicine, practice management, infectious diseases & antibiotic stewardship, cardiology & critical care are required with elective opportunities in oncology, emergency medicine, neurology, solid organ transplant, & pediatric ICU. Longitudinal projects will be related to medication utilization and safety. Residents are expected to complete a year-long research project that contributes to the advancement of pharmaceutical care & present these findings at the ASHP Midyear clinical meeting (poster) & the Mid-South Residency Conference held in Memphis, TN. There are extensive opportunities for teaching, including participation in the UTHSC Teaching and Learning program, didactic teaching, precepting of students and leading small group sessions.

BMH-M provides an educational environment that reflects a variety of practice settings pharmacists may encounter including rounding services, consult based patient care & protocol driven initiatives. A resident of BMH-M will attain clinical & professional experiences with the ability to thrive in a variety of practice settings.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   

Doctor of Pharmacy degree from ACPE accredited college of pharmacy, eligible for licensure in the state of TN, PhORCAS application, letter of intent, curriculum vitae, three (3) Phorcas professional recommendations, Pharmacy School transcript and an onsite interview.
