Residency Special Features:   

This program will offer the resident opportunities to practice in diverse patient care settings across the continuum of care. The resident will gain extensive experience in the ambulatory care setting, serving in a mid-level provider role. The resident will be an active participant in all realms of pharmacy practice including leadership and management activities, clinical services and traditional pharmacist roles. The resident will leave the program with confidence to practice in multiple patient care settings as a clinical pharmacist. Core learning experiences include ambulatory care, anticoagulation, geriatrics, acute care, practice management, mental health, leadership and professional development and staffing. Electives are tailored to the resident's needs and interests. Electives may include oncology, administration, outpatient specialty care, outpatient mental health or an extension of a core experience. Residents will have the option to work with Drake University pharmacy faculty if interested in academic opportunities.

Site Special Features:   The VA Central Iowa Health Care System (VACIHCS) operates a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical facility in Des Moines, with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Mason City, Fort Dodge, Knoxville, Marshalltown and Carroll. The medical center provides acute and specialized medical and surgical services, residential outpatient treatment program in substance abuse and post-traumatic stress and a full range of mental health and long-term care services, as well as sub-acute and restorative rehabilitation services and a domiciliary.
