Residency Special Features:   

The Emergency Medicine (EM) PGY2 residency program offered at Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines (MMC - DSM) provides extensive hands-on training within the 56-bed Adult and Pediatric emergency departments with 5 core EM learning experiences. Residents also complete learning experiences in trauma, critical care, cardiology, infectious disease, and toxicology. Electives are available in EMS, Community EM, psych, and burn. The resident will also participate in journal clubs, case discussions, ED committees and work groups, complete a research project and an MUE. Teaching opportunities include CME development, precepting PGY1 residents, and didactic responsibilities at Drake University. Training is individualized for each resident to meet their personal and professional goals.

Special Requirements for Acceptance:   

PharmD, completion of ASHP accredited PGY1 residency, US citizenship status, eligibility for Iowa licensure, academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and three PHORCAS recommendation forms (no separate letters needed).

It has a 44-bed Adult and 12-bed Pediatric Emergency department with approximately 70,000 patient visits annually. MMC-DSM is a Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center, and has medical residency programs in surgery, internal medicine, and family medicine.
